Up in Norrbotten we hunt two different types of grouse - the valley grouse and the mountain grouse. They are very difficult to distinguish from each other. Grouse is hunted from August 25 to March 15 in Sweden. We usually hunt ptarmigan with dogs all year round, unless the terrain is too tough. Ptarmigan in the spring are hunted above the cultivation line, in the mountain areas.

According to many, the grouse/ptarmigan is perceived as the tastiest food game of our huntable birds. Ptarmigan breasts can be used like a smaller chicken fillet - either cooked as the main ingredient in a dish or used as a topping, in a stew pan or on Muurikka.
